I’m blogging this from the LSE itself today - I’m at an event about blogging and journalism. My comments in italics

Meta comment: The notes below may or may not turn into a ‘proper posting’ - as John Lloyd and Robin Mansell pointed out one of the problems with blogging as an alternative space for journalism is that good journalism requires time and time is money. I could spend several hours turning the comments that follow into a report on the event complete with my own thoroughly-thought-through comments but when I was a journalist that would cost you at least £200 to get. There are very few opportunities to make a reasonable income from blogging so it will always be dominated by people who have time to do it either because they have an income elsewhere and adequate spare time or because they have an axe to grind about some particular issue.

Time taken to improve this blog posting would come at the expense of my thesis and at the moment I can’t really afford it. Anyway, nobody said anything that sufficiently outraged me to make a counter-blast worth my while.

If I had spoken out at the meeting it would have been to suggest that what is needed now is some way to broaden the kinds of people who blog today. There are millions of people who might want some way to express themselves but who feel nobody would want to listen to them. Perhaps some kind of school blogging programme should be considered alongside other IT literacy items on the syllabus?

WriteToThem.com - like the name says this site lets you locate and then email or fax not just your member of Parliament (as its predecessor faxyourmp did) but your local councillors, MEP or MSP plus Welsh or London Assembly Members. It’s bizarre that this had to be done through a charity - MySociety - set up by a committed policy wonk rather than being something that our own government would have implemented ages ago, but better late than never I suppose. At least the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister did fund the project in the end.

Now comes the question of whether these representatives will actually respond to enquiries. My MP, Jeremy Corbyn certainly didn’t when I tried sending him a message via faxyourMP (and the statistics suggest he rarely does respond). I ended up having to pick up his email address directly via a pamphlet…

I thought SixApart’s framing of what weblogging ‘is’ was interesting (thanks Lilia for pointing to it). They offer as examples one weblog - dotmoms - that is clearly personal but which describes itself as being about the writing rather than about self expression. The other two example blogs are about sharing knowledge rather than sharing personal experience. Of course Typepad is ‘high end’ blog software so it is not surprising to see it trying to define blogging as knowledge management in this way. It is arguably attempting (consciously or unconsciously) to shift the framing of weblogging away from the ‘tainted’ image of an activity for angst-ridden teens to something used by ‘’serious people for serious purposes’.

Or perhaps I am reading too much into this?

I just finished working through Speaking into the Air, hoping it would have something to say about the more personal forms of weblog communication. Though the book is interestingly broad in its references (Socrates, Jesus, Hegel and Marx all have their place here) it is surprisingly narrow in its definition of what communication is/should be ‘for’. His argument, (very cursorily summarised) is that instead of seeking to impose our meanings on others in communication we should communicate in ways that allow others to learn and think for themselves, respecting their difference:

The authentic representation of self or world not only is impossible, it is also never enough. Needed instead is a stoic willingness to go through the motions that will evoke the truth for others. The problem of communication is not language’s slipperiness, it is the unfixable difference between the self and the other. The challenge of communication is not to be true to our own interiority but to have mercy on others for never seeing ourselves as we do.

This is a rather instrumental/political view of the uses of communication. It doesn’t to my mind tackle the need to communicate not to make a particular impression or convey an idea but just to be heard and perhaps to help in one’s self understanding through communicative performance. He does mention Carl Rogers and other theorists of the therapeutic value of communication but only in passing. I am currently working on the assumption that this is what is going on with postings like Justin Hall’s now-famous online breakdown and other online confessional blogging. What do you think?

One fascinating thing to come out of the book - tangentially - is that in the 18th C newsletters were meant to circulate and blanks were left for people to leave additional notices. “Some postmasters in the colonial period apparently freely quoted in their newspapers from love letters and personal correspondence” (Floherty 1939 Make Way for the Mail).

My site now has a short summary of my planned PhD research: Private Lives Lived in Public: Weblogs and Self Performance. I would be interested in what people think of it and I am particularly interested in hearing more about:

• Theories of how producers of alternative media - particularly earlier ones - benefit from being able to perform aspects of themselves hitherto denied them (Clemencia Rodr?guez is my only non-new media source so far).
• Sociological literatures on reflexive self performance (particularly autobiography) Where would be a good place to start with Judith Butler?
• Methodologically, in principle any communication is arguably a form of self performance but some are more clearly self-performative than others. For example I would argue Justin’s video below is intensely self-performative while “I ate corn flakes this morning - I like corn flakes” is less so. Would concentrating on the authors of weblogs at the ‘highly performative’ end of this continuum be a defensible research practice and if so how can I choose them in a consistent fashion?

Perhaps predictably, he gathered a lot of support but also inspired mockery.

P.S. I wish academic conferences would start providing downloadable audio files of their gatherings so those of us who can’t attend could still benefit from some of the insights there. I doubt that providing this would jeopardise the conferences themselves…
