Hi All, I’ve been in ‘writing mode’ (AKA total hibernation) these days, so my apologies for not being around much or if I’ve missed anything. It’s great to come back and see so many of you writing about wild and wonderful things.

Speaking of which, there is a group in South London that is working towards providing community access to the internet via wireless nodes. They call themselves Boundless and although at least one of their founding members, James Stevens, has been doing similar kinds of projects for many years, they decided to become a coop last year. I attended one of their open sessions last night, and in addition to being a friendly bunch, the thing I found most exciting about the whole project is the emphasis on community participation and by extension, community building.

This map shows some of the 45 currently existing nodes. Basically, it works by bringing together people who are willing to host nodes, subsidizing the cost of the technical materials (including a 2 MB cable connection with unlimited download space) by charging those who use it a low monthly access cost. So locals can then connect to the wireless node rather than having their own cable connection. It is in this way that each node constitutes an actual community of people sharing not only a network, but also a neighbourhood. Their aims are to provide internet connections ‘at cost’ and provide an ethical alternative to faceles, corporate and for profit internet services. As I understand it, like the Urban Tapestries public trial, they are using the Locustworld mesh network.

Although I am still uncertain of a lot of the details (e.g. is it legal? how and who would regulate various community connections? what about governance, potential mis-use? etc.) Boundless, like so many locative media projects, has bottum-up, ‘for-the-people’, communty based objectives. One of the things that I think is so innovative about this group is that it has also set out (or is in the process of setting out) an achievable vision of how to realize these aims.

It’s not just a wireless or networking project, but one that is locally rooted, bringing together the social and the technical in a very powerful way - and adds a whole dimension to the terms ‘connectivity’ and ‘locative media’ generally. And it’s happening in my backyard! I’m intensely curious about how it is going to develop.

Many librarians (and academics) are accustomed to being somewhat snobbish about the Internet and often rightly so. Historically it has been great at providing stuff dealing with current events and issues but it has tended to have a lousy “memory”. If you want to know what people wrote and thought prior to 1998 or so, you normally need to consult a library.
This is now starting to change. In 2003 there was a flurry of announcements from Amazon, Google and others about making the full text of books available online and searchable. I confess I assumed most of this would be out of copyright not very useful texts but Google Print just (covertly) made it possible to search just the books they have scanned in (thanks Google Blog!) and a search for major theorists like my old friend Bourdieu shows a lot of good, ‘major league’ academic books are now there. I also stumbled across some entertaining recreational reading…

It’s harder to tell what Amazon has got as it mixes search by author and title etc with keyword search using the same form. Note - this only works if you search via Amazon.com (the US site) - it isn’t available through Amazon UK yet.

Of course even if you find a book you want to read via Google Print you have to read it on screen or print it out one page at a time. Amazon only lets you read a few pages from any one book as a taster.

P.S. If the book you want isn’t available in full text, a Yahoo or Google search for a book title may tell you which university or public libraries it is available at.

Update: I didn’t realise that Google like Amazon will only let you see a few pages at a time from any of the books you find if that book is still in copyright.

Ethan Zuckerman’s latest little project is measuring the ‘blogginess’ of newspapers - that is to say, how many links are there to a newspaper divided by its circulation? According to his figures the Christian Science Monitor ‘punches above its weight’ - its LpkC (links inward per thousand circulation) is 134.9. Next one down the list of US papers he calculated is the New York Times with 63.8. He isn’t looking at non-US papers yet but I’m guessing he won’t find many with a higher LpkC than The Guardian.

I just did the same calculation for the Guardian using figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulation (not including ‘bulks’) and it has a score of 109.7 which makes it the second bloggiest major newspaper. I had a hunch it would be high - the paper is in English, it has a strong online presence and it offers a left wing point of view that Americans won’t easily find elsewhere. Any other candidates? Both the FT and the Economist are, alas, mostly behind subscription barriers.

Dave Pollard makes a very rough numerical comparison of bloggers with mainstream media outlets. It’s a brave effort but it’s clearly impossible to compare newspapers and blogs - not just because the texts tend to be different sizes but because they are likely to be consumed (and produced) with such different motivations and under such different circumstances.

It does hammer home though just how limited our knowledge is of the micro-detail of how blogs are consumed compared with the detailed knowledge we have of who watches what TV programmes when and how. It’s a pity more of the large weblogs don’t provide details of their traffic as boingboing does.

By way of an antidote to America’s Army - which teaches young people to go to new places, meet new people and kill them - the UN’s World Food Programme has launched Food Force which teaches players (target ages 8-13) about the complexities involved in delivering food aid in a war zone. So much of the discussion of computer gaming is centred on possible harms - it is good to see an explicitly pro-social game, and one that has been well-liked as a game. Indeed it is actually popular enough that the download site seems to have been overwhelmed!

Just a few weeks after the launch of Ourmedia comes Google Video which also promises to archive video of any size (for free, so far) but in addition offers you the chance to sell the right to view clips. No sign that you will be able to make video clips only viewable by friends, though. And coming soon there is Vimeo which is like Flickr but for video clips instead of stills. This seems to me the most useful way to enable video sharing for most people (who only want or need to share their video with the people they know) but it is a small startup so it is not clear whether it will take off…

I reckon that media and new media scholars should make their voice heard about their preferred direction of new media development in Britain (and elsewhere)? Top of my head: open source, in-house capacity, surveillance, digital inequality, etc, etc, and unfortunately etc. again.

You may as well ask how on earth these three go together. Well.

I was at the PSA conference in Leeds yesterday. There was a panel on ‘Internet and politics’ broadly defined. Very broadly defined.

First paper by Steve Ward, on UK citizens’ uses of the Internet to re-connect with legislators. Very interesting (and I know because I co-authored it ;). I won’t say more than that.

Second paper by Andrew Chadwick, about changing organisational forms, political mobilisation, hybridity and the Internet. He looks at recent case study evidence from the US (including Moveon.org and Deanspace) to see how new media repertoires bring ‘old’ and ‘new’ together, in terms of people, resourcing and tactics. But not only: how innovation and adaptation must co-exist, and, crucially, the coming of the a new (political) information age. Highly recommended, read for yourself.

Third paper by Paul Taylor, about, well, this is a tough cookie. About the dominant panglossian view of technology, over the last century or so. And about the (suspect) use of poiesis to rescue the humanism of technology, save radicalism and find solutions to the ‘doom and gloom’. But we _are_ doomed, don’t you think otherwise. The reading list was impressive, and I ordered a copy of the forthcoming book already, examining the matrix.

I was browsing in the Victoria and Albert Museum and I came across Life in Victorian Britain by the appropriately-named Michael St John Parker for Pitkin Guides. I found it intriguing because it is clearly aimed at children or early adolescent and its view of the Victorian era in Britain is (to my eyes) startlingly conservative. For example:

A servant’s life might well have been described as rigorous and limited but, in general terms, domestic service offered security, respectability, and valued employment and training to the vast majority of those involved

Or take this:

In once sense the workplace horrors of the Industrial Revolution cannot be overstated, but in another sense they should be looked at in perspective. The vast majority of people in pre-industrial society lived in poverty, squalor, discomfort and danger. The workers who joined the new factories were fleeing an existence as agricultural labourers which was even harsher…

These would be controversial claims if developed at length but they are just stuck in in passing alongside a lengthly paean to the technological progress and Imperial greatness of the Victorian era. And my guess is that the kids reading this stuff won’t have the grounding in the detailed history to judge it properly or see what it omits. It is being taught at schools using texts similar to this one (which was published in 1999) that have stuck me with an abiding faith in the virtues of the British Empire even though intellectually I am now at the very least ambivalent about it!
