Publisher copyright policies & self-archiving
Saturday, May 21st, 2005It is possible to get published in for-profit journals and still publish on your own website as well, depending on what the policies of individual publishers are. The SHERPA project brings together the copyright policies of the major publishing houses in one place so you can see what your rights are. I am certainly glad that so many of my fellow Internet studies academics have made much of their scholarship available online - often pre-publication and fairly often even post-publication (usually in a ‘draft - not for citation’ form, but still…)
Maybe you can find the answer to anything online?
Friday, May 20th, 2005The UK government is trying out a new service - the People’s Network Enquiry Service where you can ask (it seems) just about any question you like and a librarian either from the UK or somewhere else in the world (if you mail outside 9-5 Mon to Fri) will try to answer it. Will this encourage those not online to use it by providing an easy to understand alternative to surfing? Time will tell…

How to make a vlog (video blog)
Wednesday, May 18th, 2005It didn’t take long for people to look at the increasing number of resources for free online video publishing and figure out how to use them to produce their own video-based weblogs. The good news is that it can be done and (if you have the right equipment and a broadband connection) it won’t cost you anything. The bad news is that as the tutorial makes clear it still involves jumping through a lot of hoops to make it all work. Don’t expect to see any video blogging from me any time soon!
Still, it’s interesting and once it gets made easy (perhaps Vimeo will enable this?) it might be an important direction blogging goes in. I just hope it doesn’t encourage teen blogs to head further towards self-produced porn…
In related news, the Open Media Network recently launched. It is designed to provide an easy way for users to find and download video both amateur and professional online. It won’t help you do the initial publishing but it will help you if you want to distribute something. Unfortunately for me the initial software is Windows-only, though it will be available on Mac and Linux later.

Recording interviews on a Mac
Monday, May 16th, 2005First some things you shouldn’t do:
- Use Audacity for this - it seems to crash when asked to save long files as MP3s - at least on my machine.
- Rely on just one device to record anything important. Fortunately, I was also recording my interview on a minidisc which worked so I didn’t lose my data when Audacity crashed.
- Pay for shareware software - it just seems wrong to me that I should have to pay for an application just in order to save audio from my built-in microphone to my hard disk!
Luckily I found advice on Transom - a handy website designed to help would-be amateur and semi-pro radio programme producers to get started. The somewhat convoluted answer to my problem appeared to be to use Apple’s "Garageband" which comes with new Macs - as recommended by MacWorld. Even this stopped recording for some reason after an hour and 11 minutes of my latest interview but at least let me save the results.
Any idea why that might have happened or what I should use instead?
Oxford Internet Institute unveils more research
Monday, May 9th, 2005At a recent presentation, the OII unveiled some data from its 2005 survey of UK Internet use (and put it in an international perspective). That data is on their site now. I found the slide below particularly interesting:

The choice to ‘go broadband’ in the UK doesn’t seem as income-constrained as I thought. Of course that is the percentage of UK Internet users with broadband so if you adjust for the fact that low earners are less likely to be online at all, it looks more stratified. But you can check out the presentation yourself…

Warwick hosts blogs for students
Saturday, May 7th, 2005The Guardian brings to my attention a programme that has been running at Warwick since October. Now one in five students has a blog hosted by the university. The blog hosting system is one I am not familiar with - blogbuilder - which has some interesting aggregation tools - eg you can see all Warwick blog postings on the subject of Sociology. I hope this sort of thing catches on - there are not many of us blogging sociologists in the UK at the moment - or so it seems!
Teens and privacy
Thursday, May 5th, 2005
Lois Ann Scheidt - a fellow blog researcher - draws attention to recent AOL research which says, “a surprising eighty four percent of teens said they would not be willing to share their blog with just anyone on the open web”. I suspect that there is a big difference between what teens say if asked and what many of them do. Certainly there is plenty of evidence of very open blogging of sensitive information online even when privacy tools are available (eg using Livejournal). Our recent report on children and Internet use highlights some differences between what kids do, what they say they do and what they tell their parents they do.
