As well as the new UK survey and qualitative information it provides, it contains a review of the literature on the social networking focused on potential harms co-authored by Sonia Livingstone and Andrea Milwood Hargrave with myself contributing. We would be interested to hear any reactions.

The BBC has launched BBC Memoryshare

TakeAway - ‘the Festival of do it yourself Media’ is on in W London. This sounds like a great idea and I hope events like this one take off across the country. So much of government policy about the digital divide is about enabling people to consume Internet media - little effort seems to be going into helping people produce their own. My only concern is that the programme does look a little ‘art world’ inward-looking. I wonder whether it will manage to reach out to people not already integrated in the art and techie communities…

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and ‘99th Greatest Briton‘* who has just started blogging. As he points out in his first entry, he always wanted the web to be a fully read-write medium not just a publishing one, so weblogging is a natural extension of his vision.

Not surprisingly the comments tend to be one of "hey welcome", "thank you so much" and "can I talk to you about x?"…

It is possible to get published in for-profit journals and still publish on your own website as well, depending on what the policies of individual publishers are. The SHERPA project brings together the copyright policies of the major publishing houses in one place so you can see what your rights are. I am certainly glad that so many of my fellow Internet studies academics have made much of their scholarship available online - often pre-publication and fairly often even post-publication (usually in a ‘draft - not for citation’ form, but still…)

The UK government is trying out a new service - the People’s Network Enquiry Service where you can ask (it seems) just about any question you like and a librarian either from the UK or somewhere else in the world (if you mail outside 9-5 Mon to Fri) will try to answer it. Will this encourage those not online to use it by providing an easy to understand alternative to surfing? Time will tell…

WriteToThem.com - like the name says this site lets you locate and then email or fax not just your member of Parliament (as its predecessor faxyourmp did) but your local councillors, MEP or MSP plus Welsh or London Assembly Members. It’s bizarre that this had to be done through a charity - MySociety - set up by a committed policy wonk rather than being something that our own government would have implemented ages ago, but better late than never I suppose. At least the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister did fund the project in the end.

Now comes the question of whether these representatives will actually respond to enquiries. My MP, Jeremy Corbyn certainly didn’t when I tried sending him a message via faxyourMP (and the statistics suggest he rarely does respond). I ended up having to pick up his email address directly via a pamphlet…

How about the BBC challenging Google for the provision of online services?

All blogging is political it seems. Or not.

I met with Tim Ireland, the other night, in London. In many a way he’s one of the most influential political bloggers in Britain, writing about the Sun, current affair and, ehr, MPs blogging. He gave me food for thought on the nature of blogging, i.e. what makes it different, and its possible effect on the political system.

In the first respect, he was saying that its’ all about trust, transparency and the distribution of social intelligence. By that meaning, a blogger’s influence is function of her capacity to build an argument which is based on demonstrable evidence, and stands the test of other bloggers’ scrutiny (and the public as well). In this way a blogger builds trust, or reputation, and authority with that. Transparency ir required to coalesce this process, at different levels: IP, content, personae. That is you need to know where your traffic and comments are coming from, the author of posts/comments and where the evidence is to support an argument.

This has consequences for politics and to some extent also democracy. Well, we agreed that it does, in four overlapping respects. First, blogging is a form of glorified, old time journalism, by which the truth emerges most of the time from research, testing and critical, peer assessment. Second, blogging is a collective exercise in online deliberation, as bloggers come together as a public online. They judge other bloggers on the grounds of the evidence presented through rational scrutiny, and challenge authority with authority. Plus, on the Internet nobody knows you are a dog-blogger. Finally, this process leads to the collectivised and bottom-owned articulation of social intelligence, by which new meanings are built and new structure of knowledge, and power, created. Finally, related to that, blogging is a great campaigning toll, which exploits citizens’ apathy and laziness, and is thoroughly embedded in search engine dynamics. It comes down to who comes up. And this is crucial for political campaigns.

Of course each of these models has flaws and each complements the others. But enough for now, I’ll need to take a deep breath and think about what I just said. I’ll leave it for tomorrow.

And this is not quite the terms in which we’ve discussed it, rather an academic rendition of the chat we had. Tom Watson chimed in briefly at the meeting, but I reckon he was too bored by blog-academic spiel to stay for long. Which sort of makes sense, as the ‘chat’ was 3-hours long; most of the other stuff from the meeting will be coming out, Steve Ward and I hope, as a research note for our research project. I was at the Hansard Society’s event on Tuesday night, the 7th, about the Internet and elections. I tohught it was OK, bit of a copy-cat of four years ago, as Stephen Coleman pointed out. Same old same old, except it’s new media we’re talking about. You can read some reports online, Bill Thompson’s, Brian Wheeler’s (BBC), VoxPolitics.

I was impressed with Phil Noble’s performance, partly because it was the first time I saw him presenting. Between a missionary and a visionary, with a good graps of what’s going on with politics and technology. It’s the beginning, of the beginning of the beginning, that was his mantra on the night. Revolution and all the rest. I have to admit I was fascinated by the extent of evidence he marshalled in favour of the revolution, on the one hand; of no-nonsense political campaigning, on the other. Campaign revolution then. Beware: the cyber-otpimists are back. And now they have some data…

I knew how good a speaker Stephen Coleman is, no surprise there. He wasn’t happy when Phil slapped him on the back dubbing him a ‘data man’. Don’t be fooled: he is not, he’s a political theorist. Event though I liked the data on use of Internet at last American election: importnace of email networks (surpire surprise) and youth doing different things (surprise surprise), and the Internet replacing other media(sorry, am I being repetitive here?). Well, not. I really enjoyed it. I especially liked the last question they asked in the questionnaire: “During the election, I used the Interent for…” and the nice theme analysis which was presented. Of course, the question is leading, and results should be taken with an extra granum salis. Thouhg this is the kind of questions that should get asked more often in relation with Internet and politics, Internet and Society, Internet and your gran’ma.

Questions were a bit sheepish to my taste, the so-what question wasn’t asked in the end, and I was too tired to ask it myself. I was inbetween two days of research interviews, and a bit drained. Can I ask it now, too late? So what? So what for democracy: as Coleman said in his conclusions, does the internet matter for those reading the Sun, muttering under their breath, as they read, ‘those bloody bastards’. Maybe they’ll ask me to spell that instead. In that case: Albion, I’m coming.
